Field Update
Water for South Sudan’s (WFSS) 2021-22 season is now in full swing, bringing access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services to those in need.
The season started in November, with the rehab team heading out to repair older WFSS wells and bring them up to our newer design standard with a reinforced concrete platform and community-supplied fencing. The team has already rehabilitated 18 of WFSS’s older wells, with a seasonal goal of 60.
The drilling team headed to the field in December and has completed the drilling of two new wells. A short break became necessary in order to complete some minor repairs on our main drilling rig. We are now planning to have two drilling teams in the field, drilling near each other, to maximize our efforts.
Hygiene is the “H” in WASH , and our hygiene education training continues with both the drilling and rehab teams, helping communities improve their hygiene practices and furthering the impact of access to clean water.
We’re delighted to share that we have finished the first quarter of a UNICEF partnership that will bring WASH services to schools and clinics. So far, our teams have completed 5 well rehabs; water management training; pump mechanic training; hygiene training; and construction of 4 emergency latrines and rehabilitation of 10 emergency (temporary) latrines.
Finally, we’re thrilled to announce the construction of our second school latrine, along with a water storage project in the same community. Both will greatly improve the day-to-day lives of the students and community members in the surrounding area.
“Water for South Sudan continues to be a leader in providing WASH services to the people of South Sudan,” says Country Director Ajang “AJ” Agok. “Our spirit of teamwork is the key to our success. Thank you to all the donors who support us and enable our work!”
