Global Handwashing Day provides an opportunity to increase awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing as a way to prevent the spread of disease.

People living in South Sudan do not have ready, regular access to hygiene resources. And we know that safe hygiene practices—especially hand washing during the pandemic—are vital to keeping people and communities healthy. That’s why WFSS implements hygiene education training in every village that receives a new or rehabilitated well in order to ensure health and to protect the sanctity of the water source.

For this year’s Global Handwashing Day, our staff in South Sudan held an event to celebrate and educate locals about the importance of handwashing with the help of partners like UNICEF. The celebration was held in Wau Stadium and was attended by the general public.

Invited guests were welcomed by the WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) Sub-National Coordinator for Western Bahr El Ghazal State who suggested the event as a way to gather people for an educational experience and to celebrate ways of maintaining physical health.

he WFSS hygiene team provided handwashing facilities for the event and demonstrated proper handwashing techniques (as shown in the photos to the right). After demonstrations were concluded, community members were encouraged to practice their handwashing techniques as well.
