Why We IGC: Mount Cheam Christian School

Each month leading up to IGC 2024, we are highlighting the educators and schools that have been instrumental in inspiring and motivating their students to support clean water projects in South Sudan. Next up is Mount Cheam Christian School (MCCS) and Grade 7 Teacher Henry Klaassen!

MCCS has participated in the Iron Giraffe Challenge since the 2018-2019 school year. As a result, they have raised over $32,000.

Henry shared that MCCS first heard about IGC from the librarian who read the class the book A Long Walk to Water, and it just led from there!

He continues, “We spend a lot of time helping those closer to home, but this was perfect for helping people across the world, and feeling a connection to other humans. It also allows us to have an opportunity to appreciate the plenitude of our healthy delicious water, and hopefully allow others to enjoy that as well.”

“Our main fundraiser is a lunch fundraiser for our school's Grades 6-12 students, totally organized and run by the Grade 7 class. The students also garner quite a few funds by canvassing their families and neighbourhoods.”

Participating in the IGC has allowed us to spend worthwhile time gaining experience in organizing and running fundraisers, working with funds, cooperating, learning sales techniques, but even more than these, being able to use our resources to help others in a meaningful way, ‘carrying one another’s burden,’ and learn more about our human family.
