WFSS Acts as WASH Responder for Sudan Crisis
UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) recently approached WFSS to act as the WASH responder to support the development of a refugee camp for Sudanese refugees.
Our team left on Saturday to visit the newly established Wedwiel Refugee Camp in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, South Sudan. The camp fencing is currently being constructed. Before anyone can set foot into the camp, water access and sanitation services must be available to ensure the health and safety of all refugees. WFSS immediately jumped into action and completed a newly drilled well in less than two days.
The new well, along with a solar pump, will become an integral piece of a water storage & distribution system at the camp. The next steps include constructing a raised water tower and installing underground piping to multiple water kiosks throughout the camp.
To create a harmonic relationship, the water system will serve both the host community and the refugee camp. Piping from the water system will be directed to the host community and locations throughout the refugee camp: a clinic, latrine (toilet facility), water taps, and shower areas.
Team members will also be constructing the latrine and are hiring an excavator to complete the digging of the pit.
