Women’s Empowerment Project Launched

The Women’s Empowerment Project, funded by an anonymous foundation and implemented by Water for South Sudan, marks a significant milestone in addressing women’s needs in the community of Udhum.

The year-long project signifies a commitment to advancing gender equality, promoting women's rights, and improving the overall well-being of communities in Udhum, Aweil West County. The project aims to enhance women’s socio-economic status through various interventions centered around water access, improved household nutrition, and women’s economic empowerment. The inception and official launch of the project signifies a collaborative effort between stakeholders to uplift the lives of women in the Udhum community.

Key Activities of the Women’s Empowerment Project include:

  1. Drilling and Installation of Water Yard with Distribution System: The project involves the construction of a water yard equipped with a distribution system to ensure reliable access to clean water for the community.

  2. Construction of a Women's Center with a Latrine: A dedicated women's center will be built to serve as a hub for training, skill development, and community gatherings. Additionally, the provision of a latrine promotes safe sanitation and hygiene practices.

  3. Formation and Training of VSLA Group: The formation and training of Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) groups empower women to save, invest, and access financial services, fostering economic independence and resilience.

  4. Formation of Micro-Finance Group: Establishing a micro-finance group provides women opportunities for entrepreneurship and small business development, contributing to local economic growth.

  5. Formation and Training of Water Management Committee: A water management committee will be formed and trained to oversee the operations and maintenance of the water yard, ensuring sustainable water management practices.

  6. Hygiene Awareness and Campaign Sessions: Hygiene awareness and campaign sessions will promote health and sanitation practices within the community, emphasizing the importance of clean water, proper sanitation, and personal hygiene.

Women’s groups, community leaders, and local authorities led by Payam Administrators attended the official launch of the Women Empowerment Project. The Water for South Sudan team, comprising of the Country Director, Programme Manager, WASH Field Coordinator, and Drilling Team staff, played a pivotal role in coordinating the event and engaging with participants.

The construction of the water yard would be a major boost here as the village is inhabited by people of diverse backgrounds, and it has turned into a second home to refugees and returnees from Sudan’s crisis.”

”I can’t believe that Water for South Sudan and the foundation has relieved me and other mothers of hours of walking to look for clean drinking water.
