Women's Empowerment Project Update #5 and Launch of Second Project

The Women’s Empowerment Project, funded by an anonymous foundation and implemented by the Water for South Sudan Foundation in March, marks a significant milestone in addressing women’s needs in the Udhum, Aweil West County community. 

This project aims to enhance the socio-economic status of women in Udhum through various interventions, including Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs), vegetable production, and hygiene promotion. 

The team has made significant progress in setting the foundation for long-term impact, and we’re happy to share the most recent updates below:

Our Latest Accomplishments

Vegetable Garden:

  • Udhum women completed land preparation for dry-season cultivation, including clearing grass, harvesting vegetable remains, and successfully plowing the land.

  • Group members pooled savings to procure seeds not available locally.

Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) Updates:

  • Total savings for November reached 152,000 SSP (equivalent to $29 USD).

Hygiene Promotion Monthly Data Collection:

507 people were reached in Udhum across various hygiene promotion topics, including water, food, domestic, personal, and waste disposal hygiene.

  • 91 males, 172 females, 80 boys, 148 girls, and 16 people with disabilities were reached.

  • Activities spanned the five weeks of November, with significant participation in each week.

Plus, we have an exciting announcement!

Building on the successful implementation of the first Women’s Empowerment Project in Udhum, Northern Bahr El Ghazal state, we’re thrilled to share that an anonymous foundation has supported a second project, which has been launched in Tonj South County, Warrap State. This year-long initiative is set to make a significant impact and encompasses the following projects:

  • Construction of a women ‘s center, which includes a meeting space, a latrine (toilet facility), and a shower room

  • Drilling a borehole equipped with submersible pumps, a solar system, and an elevated steel storage tank will provide equitable access to safe drinking water at the women's center.

  • Training of 35 women water management committee members to manage the water point effectively and efficiently

Updates from the field

  • With the support of the Directorate of Land, Tonj South County, land boundaries have been successfully demarcated

  • A geo-survey was conducted to identify the optimal well location, and drilling of the well is complete

  • The project was officially launched at the county level and attended by key stakeholders, including the County Executive Director, representatives from the State Ministry of Gender and Social Welfare, the Department of Agriculture, the WASH Department, the town mayor, and community representatives.

  • Organized a briefing session with women at the site post-project launch to ensure an understanding of the project objectives and highlight the importance of their active participation.
